One afternoon while having a snack on our balcony, we discovered that finches LOVE Sunchips.

Word spread quickly that we had the goods.

Little birds can get very bold when you have something they want. I’m pretty certain we could have gotten them to eat out of our hands, but those little beaks looked sharp. I was fluttered at when I held a chip aloft too long on the way to my mouth.

We spoiled them so much that they came to expect a daily snack, and assembled en masse to wait for it. We generally left the sliding door open while we were in the room and they gradually edged their way in, landing about 16″ inside until being scolded and hopping back out.
I did worry a little that the chips would give them teeny-tiny heart attacks, but figured there are worse ways to die than eating treats in Hawaii.

One of my favorite things during our vacation was walking around the property after dinner. They’ve got it beautifully landscaped with tons of orchids, birds of paradise, and other exotic flowers. There are also ducks, flamingos, penguins, and other birds. The gas torches give everything a warm glow.

I always request a high floor in hotels because I like a view, and what a view we had from the 29th floor!

I couldn’t wait to hike to the top of Diamond Head (seen in the distance). I had packed sturdy shoes and my telephoto lens just for that purpose. I imagined the macro photos I would take of whatever flora we encountered on the way up. On Wednesday we reserved a car for Friday, our last day, so we could do the hike and snorkel a reef that some locals had recommended.
And then I spent Thursday with food poisoning. I (barely) recovered only just long enough for our scheduled activities — a massage and a night dive — but then it was right back to miserable, so we decided that Diamond Head was out for the next day. Instead of the view of our hotel from Diamond Head, please enjoy a few views of the opposite.

You may not know this, but I’ve been away for a couple weeks.

Mark was there, too.

We did some sightseeing…

And made friends with some locals:

We had a great time, but how quickly vacation ends. I have approximately one trillion photos between the two cameras that I brought so it may take a while, but I’ll share more as I get them uploaded!

Attention, Dad: it’s today!

He knows why that’s funny and he can’t be upset about it, because I got my sense of humor from him. Much to the chagrin of all who know us, and especially those who have been in the same room as both of us when we were on a roll.
My dad is one of the kindest, most ethical, smartest people I have had the privilege to know. And he can string together at least a dozen terrible puns on any theme before you can get your wits about you enough to beg him to stop (marine life puns were always popular on nights when Mom was cooking fish. Or anytime, actually. He just can’t kelp himself).

Thanks for everything, Dad. And just because I don’t have a copy of the picture of you in my She-Ra Halloween costume:

I just love them!

That’s most of ‘em. The warmer ones are stowed away until cool weather returns. They’re my uniform most weekdays — cardigan, camisole, trousers, jewelry. I look polished but I’m super-comfortable and I didn’t even have to iron or tuck anything in. Nobody really knows how lazy I truly am just by looking at me. I also carry one whenever I’m wearing a sundress or sleeveless shirt, since I’m always cold.
I prefer 3/4-length sleeves, which work most of the year in Houston if you’re an office-dweller like me. I have a soft spot for a good cashmere sweater, but I think the most versatile fabric for everyday wear is an acrylic blend, which is easy to care for and still looks good after countless washes. My current favorite source for the perfect cardigan is Express. Mine are probably the most frequently worn items in my wardrobe, but they still look nearly new.

The obsession continues:

Diamonds and emeralds in a platinum and gold setting. Looks like maybe ruby eyes, but the listing doesn’t mention them. And it’s nearly my ring size — must be fate!
I’ll admit, it’s all a bit much. But I think I could make it work.

I love bath and body products. Really love them. But my rate of use seems inversely proportional to the amount left in the bottle. Here’s the body lotion situation under my bathroom sink, with the two largest bottles containing no more than 10% of their original volume:

That doesn’t include the bottles that I stuck in my gym bag in hopes of using them up. And let’s not even talk about the perfume situation, or the hair product situation, because I really like trying a variety of those things, too. To be fair, though, the hair product situation is usually worsened by running out of my products of choice, not finding them at the store, and having to substitute with something that ends up being kind of crappy but not necessarily awful, and therefore really difficult to use up. But now I order my mousse by the economy pack (see left side of picture), because just when I find something that really works, they stop selling it in any brick and mortar store and I have to hoard it by the case via Amazon.
Now that I’m looking at that picture, I’m pretty sure a couple of those items are probably close to ten years old. Once in a while the whole ‘products’ thing just gets so out of control that I purge anything I know I’ll never use, but apparently I am in denial about some things. I’m really sick of looking at this motley collection of lotions, so I am currently sporting the most thoroughly moisturized skin in Houston. Darn it, I am determined to get through these stupid lotions…so I can try some new lotions.

Like my Lolë dress, one item that’s been getting a lot of wear lately is this buckled cuff that I picked up from Editors’ Closet:

It looks black, but it’s a very dark purple. It’s by Seattle designer Tara Sauvage. She’s been around awhile, designing accessories for other companies, but now she has her own line. Rocco e Dante is named after her two pugs, who help with the inspiration and modeling.
Her bracelets are fun, with the tough-girl, rock ‘n’ roll styling that I’m a sucker for — I had a hard time choosing between this and the zipper cuff. Maybe next time her line comes to Editors’ Closet I’ll pick up the other!

I think I have worn this dress almost every weekend since the weather got warm enough:

This is the first piece of clothing I’ve bought from Lolë, and I’m sure it won’t be the last. It wears like a t-shirt, but it has some nice little details like the collar and the tiny zippered pocket at the waist. You could easily fit a chapstick, a small cell phone, or your ID and some cash in there. It dries pretty quickly, so it’s been no problem to decide the night before that I want it for the next day and throw it in the washer.
I wish I had it in every color, but my other dresses might get jealous. Maybe one or two more couldn’t hurt…
